Katy Magruder (formerly Garton) is an independent filmmaker in Missoula, Montana. As a writer, director, editor and producer, Katy received a Masters in Fine Arts from Montana State University's Science & Natural History Documentary Filmmaking Program in the fall of 2007. During both her graduate and post-graduate work, Katy kept busy by collaborating with an array of people on a variety of documentary projects, including organizations such as the Thermal Biology Institute, The Colorado College, The Montana Indian Hall of Fame, SpectrUM Science Center, Missoula Youth Homes, Missoula In Motion, and University of Montana’s NSF EPSCoR Program. During graduate school, she produced, directed, filmed, and edited 'Invisible Yellowstone'- a 30 minute film about the microscopic life thriving in Yellowstone's thermal environments – which was awarded two Silver Telly Awards in the science programming category. Her most recent film, 'Little Mom Full of Color' is a 59-minute documentary that explores Katy's journey to understand her mother's terminal illness and death. Katy has a passion for sharing stories through film, and enjoys helping indivduals and organizations bring their stories to life through film.
